Margin and markup differ.
Wholesale margin divides by the wholesale selling price. A $10 cost and $20 wholesale price gives a 50% margin.
Markup on cost divides by the entered cost. The same $10 cost and $20 wholesale price gives a 100% markup.
Retailer margin compares suggested retail with wholesale before the retailer’s other costs. A $20 wholesale price and $40 retail price gives 50%.
Target margin uses cost ÷ (1 − margin). The result rounds upward to a cent so the displayed price still meets the target.
